Trend analysis

Trend analysis

Teams compare current values with prior periods, baselines, targets, or forecasts and may smooth noisy data with rolling averages. Trend interpretation should account for calendar effects, product releases, tracking changes, campaigns, and changes in the user mix. A visible movement is not automatically significant or causal, so segmentation and anomaly investigation are often needed.

What is Trend analysis?

Trend analysis examines how a metric or pattern changes over time to identify direction, seasonality, cycles, and meaningful shifts.

Why it matters

Teams compare current values with prior periods, baselines, targets, or forecasts and may smooth noisy data with rolling averages. Trend interpretation should account for calendar effects, product releases, tracking changes, campaigns, and changes in the user mix. A visible movement is not automatically significant or causal, so segmentation and anomaly investigation are often needed.

Example

Weekly active users rise for eight weeks, but a breakdown shows the growth comes from a temporary campaign in one region.
